What size steel for a kukri?

A kukri is the widest knife most smiths will make: the belly ahead of the bend is 2 1/4 in or more, so you either start with 2 1/2 in bar or, traditionally, forge the bend and belly from narrower, thicker stock. The calculator assumes the first — 2 1/2 × 1/4 in — which is what a spring-steel (5160) kukri usually starts as in a western shop.

The Nepali method starts with leaf spring or 3/8 in bar — experienced makers say 1/4 in is thin for a kukri and 3/8 in isn't overly heavy — and forges the curve, moving metal into the belly so the finished spine tapers from 5/16 in at the handle toward the tip. It uses less bar but far more hammer; if you go that way, work from the steel weight the calculator gives rather than the bar dimensions.

The kukri is a tool first

This is the single correction worth making about the kukri: in Nepal it is the everyday working knife of fields and households — clearing brush, cutting firewood, building, butchering meat and vegetables, skinning. The first European account, Colonel Kirkpatrick's from a 1793 mission, describes it worn by everyone and chiefly used for felling small trees and clearing the road. Its fighting reputation is real but secondary, and largely built during the British-army era after Gurkha troops met the East India Company at Kalunga in 1814.

The form is what makes it work: a forward-curving single edge with the mass ahead of the hand, so it chops like a small hatchet, and a deeply wedge-sectioned spine — five to ten millimetres at the bolster tapering to about two at the tip — that keeps the weight where it does work. General-purpose examples run 40–45 cm overall and 450–900 g. The traditional hilt is a stick tang peened over at the pommel; full tang is a modern export feature. The scabbard carries a small utility knife, the karda, and a chakmak, which is a fire striker as well as a burnishing steel — calling it just a sharpener loses half of what it was for.

The folklore around this knife is thick, so: it does not have to draw blood before being sheathed, which is a regimental story rather than a Nepali practice and collapses the moment you remember it is the knife used for firewood and vegetables. The descent from the Greek kopis by way of Alexander rests on a single citation, a gap of two thousand years and several hundred kilometres of geography, and forward-curving blades have been invented independently many times. And the notch at the blade root — kauro — almost certainly is not a blood or sap drip: it is absent or shallow on the oldest surviving examples and becomes deeper and more ornate over time, which is how a symbol behaves, not a drain. The honest answer is that it is symbolic and its original meaning is lost.
