A bowie is where 1/4 in bar earns its keep. A 9 in blade with a 1 1/2 in ricasso needs 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 in wide stock, and the American Bladesmith Society teaches its 10 in test knife from 1 1/2 × 1/4 in. Go wider rather than thicker if you want a big clip and a deep belly.
Hidden tangs are traditional on bowies and forge well: the tang is drawn from the same bar to about a third of its finished length, so an 8 1/2 in billet makes a 14 in knife. That is a lot of hammer time; a press or a striker helps.

Copy link to this calculationThe bowie is a large general-purpose belt knife from a time and place where fights were common and a pistol gave you one shot. It got its name from the Sandbar Fight of September 1827 near Natchez, where a formal duel ended without blood and the brawl afterwards did not — Jim Bowie, already shot and stabbed, killed Norris Wright with a knife in about ninety seconds. National newspapers carried it within months and every frontiersman wanted one.
Here is the part most makers get wrong. The knife everyone pictures — clip point, big brass guard, coffin handle — is a later commercial pattern read backwards onto the legend. The only near-contemporary description, from Bowie's brother Rezin in 1838, is of a straight-backed blade about 9½ in long, 1½ in wide and ¼ in thick, with no clip and no handguard; witnesses at the sandbar called it a large butcher knife. No knife that can be reliably traced to Jim Bowie survives, and the most famous claimant was attributed to him by a psychic reading and then failed metallurgical scrutiny. James Black's role is legend at one remove, resting on a memoir written decades later by a man who was three years old at the time; the Historic Arkansas Museum, which defends Black's importance, still states plainly that he did not invent the bowie and did not make the sandbar knife.
The pattern as we know it was largely settled in Sheffield, England, which supplied something like eight or nine of every ten bowies carried on the American frontier. If you are building a historical reproduction, decide which bowie you mean — the 1830s straight-backed butcher shape or the Sheffield export pattern — because they are different knives.
The forging allowance matters more on a bowie than a small knife. Twelve percent is a good default, and go one thickness size up if you plan to forge the bevels in fully and then flatten the spine — some smiths start 9–10 in bowies from 3/8 in bar and forge the distal taper in.

1/4 in at the ricasso is the classic figure, tapering toward the tip. 3/16 in makes a lighter, faster blade that still chops if the steel is tough — 5160 or 80CrV2.
Either. Forged saves steel and lets you move mass into the belly; stock removal from 1/4 in plate is simpler and gives dead-flat geometry. The calculator shows both — switch the method toggle.
